The Road to Cajamarca

In Peru, as in Mexico, the arrival of the Spaniards was preceded by bad omens. A thunderbolt struck the Inca’s palace. A condor—the messenger of the sun—pursued by several hawks fell into the great square at Cuzco. It was sick and died. Or so the chroniclers later reported.

But above all, what was most worrying was the fatal end of the Inca world foretold by Viracocha: the empire would be destroyed in the reign of the twelfth Inca. And the eleventh Inca was the father of Atahualpa and his brother Huascar. Titu Cusi says:

Atahualpa heard [the news] from Indians who lived on the bank of the Southern Sea…. they said that some people, quite different in habits and dress, who seemed to be “viracochas,” which is the name we used to give to the creator of all things … were coming with large animals that had silver feet … and also because they had yllapas (that was what we called thunder) we said that to describe the muskets which we thought were thunder coming from the heavens.
